Have you ever heard of RFI being caused by 12-V fluorescent lights? ...

Q Russ, VE6VK, asks, “Have you ever heard of RFI being caused by 12-V fluorescent lights? I’ve encountered some that create interference throughout the HF bands. Do you have a cure?”

A The only cure I can think of would be to try a “brute-force” type filter on the 12-V leads. One can be made fairly easily by putting 100 μH inductors (approximate) in series with each lead, and putting 250 pF capacitors between the positive to the negative leads, before and after the inductors. If you don’t have 100 μH coils handy try about 15 turns on a ferrite core—the values are not critical.
